Good morning Sioux Central, I hope everyone is staying safe and well. I wanted to give an update surrounding Covid-19 here at Sioux Central. We have had 38 new student quarantines here at Sioux Central- based on household positives only, 166 students have been quarantined since 8/24/2020 . There have been 16 new student quarantines at MCS. We have had 6 new student positive cases since last week. We now have 5 new staff cases here at Sioux Central and 3 new staff cases at MCS, which brings that total to 15 at Sioux Central and 3 at MCS. With the community increase, this doesn’t come as a surprise, so we are just working hard to keep our buildings staffed so our kids can stay in school. The new mask requirement will continue to eliminate the students from being quarantined at school. As a reminder, the Twin Lakes Conference will be requiring masks at all events, both at the Junior High and High School levels for winter activities. Sioux Central will be requiring masks at all home activities as mentioned in the original guidance sent out last week. Mr. Wood

Hello Sioux Central Community, We have seen an increase in positive COVID cases in our communities that is starting to adversely affect the attendance of healthy kids. We understand there is a personal choice in regards to personal safety and decision making around COVID-19. However, there was a change announced on September 28, 2020, when the Iowa Department of Public Health declared that if both parties in an exposure to a positive case were wearing a mask, that only the sick person would need to quarantine for 14 days. Currently, we work with IDPH to contact trace, identifying all people within 6 feet for 15 consecutive minutes. In some of our 6-12 classes, this can be a significant number of people, and this is extremely frustrating and trying on families. We have seen more students wear masks because of this new guidance, but it only applies if both people are wearing a mask. With the current contact tracing structure, we are seeing healthy kids being sent home to quarantine simply because of who they sat near. On Thursday, October 29, the Board of Education approved a change to our Return to Learn guidance by requiring a mask for all PK-12 staff and students. With our knowledge of the Board's intentions, we believe that it is important that we act now. Beginning when? Monday, November 2, 2020 Schools will implement a mask mandate for grades PK-12 that will run until we receive further guidance from the IDPH When will students be required to wear masks? Any time that they are not able to social distance (6 feet apart). Lunch Line Passing Time When Classroom Distancing Can't Be Accomplished (which is many of our classroom) Will staff be required to wear masks? Yes, any time when distancing is not possible. Will masks be required on busses? Yes, beginning Monday, November 2, masks will be required on all route and shuttle busses for all students PK-12. What happens in the event a student refuses to wear a mask? Students not in compliance will be sent to administration as this is a health issue, administration will determine next steps. What about extra curricular activities? Am I required to wear a mask at events, programs and competitions? We are requiring all individuals to wear a mask during all extracurricular activities held at Sioux Central when social distancing can not take place. Sioux Central is one of many districts in our area that have now required masks. We see the benefits of face-to-face instruction and the joy we see as our students once again are able to interact and participate in activities. We don't want to interrupt this moving forward. Again, this is our next step in slowing down our exposures and quarantines. Whether you agree with masks or not, based on the new guidance this is the one way we can keep kids in school. If you have any questions, please contact your principal. Kari Schmidt, PK-6 Principal Jeff Scharn, 7-12 Principal Kevin Wood, Superintendent

Dear Sioux Central Community, I hope everyone is staying safe and well. I wanted to give the community another weekly update surrounding COVID-19. We are continuing to do our best to keep both the students and staff here at Sioux Central safe. We have had 2 new positive student cases, taking our total to 15 students or 3.3% of our entire student body. We currently have 29 new students in quarantine since 10/21/2020. Sioux Central has had a total of 109 students quarantined or 16.5% of our student body since 8/24/2020. We have had a total of nine staff members test positive with everyone back in the building with “0” new staff cases this week. We are working hard to keep students in school. There will be additional communication sent out Thursday evening explaining the direction Sioux Central will be heading. Be safe! Go Rebels! Mr. Wood

Dear Sioux Central Community, I hope everyone was safe this weekend with the early winter weather that arrived in our area. As we begin the 2nd quarter of school, we are moving to a school-wide approach to students wearing masks vs. students not wearing masks in the classroom. Starting Monday, we are separating students based on masks vs no masks. The students have been highly encouraged to wear masks since the start of the school year, but some students are still choosing not to. Therefore, we are now having to separate students based on masks vs. no masks out of respect for those who are choosing to wear them and to avoid entire class quarantines based on the new guidance we received a short while back--https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QpqVj6wNPCXuFIdSXC1TWur9b_qPYGXQ/view?usp=sharing We have talked to students about this on Friday, and they know if they are not 6 feet apart they should have a face covering on. We want students to continue to receive face-to face instruction as we know this is what’s best for them. We are taking the necessary steps to keep our students and staff safe here at Sioux Central. We are extremely fortunate to be in school. Please remind your child to drive carefully and be safe during the upcoming winter months. Mr. Wood

Pear Deck is a communication platform that lets teachers create interactive assessments and presentations that students can follow from their personal devices. It is used in conjunction with Google slides and assists teachers with designing engaging learning experiences and embedding formative assessments into online classrooms, and is designed to integrate with a district's existing tools including both Google or Microsoft applications. Rebel Pack Program: If the RebelPack program is something your family needs, please call the elementary office or school nurse at 712-283-2571 (please advise if any food allergies). The RebelPack program is working with Sioux Central CSD to provide weekend food program to TK-6th grade students during the 2020-2021 school year. The RebelPack program is a free program that provides kid-friendly and nutritious meals and snacks for students most in-need, to eat over weekends during the school year when school meals are not available and there may be little or no food to eat at home. Please carefully consider your family's economic status and determine if this program is something needed by your child(ren). This information will be kept confidential by school coordinators. If you are able to make do without this assistance, please allow this program to be used by others. Parents and guardians concerned with food allergies need to be aware that RebelPack program items may include ingredients such as nuts, soy, wheat, eggs, and milk. The program will do their best to take these needs into consideration. However, the RebelPack program and the schools will not assume any liability for adverse reactions to food consumed.

Before you go to the polls today, we want you to know these important things: -This vote will not increase school district taxes but will provide a dedicated funding source for these projects -An approved Revenue Purpose Statement would enable the district to use SAVE funds for things like upgrading information technology infrastructure, purchasing or improving grounds, and remodeling, reconstructing, repairing, expanding, or improving school buildings. The district could also upgrade energy efficiency, furnish school facilities, and purchase transportation with these funds. Please get out and vote today! Go Rebels!

Hello Parents and Students, I wanted to update everyone after Thursday's announcement from the Governor and the Iowa Department of Education. We are still planning on resuming face to face instruction based on the start dates communicated previously in each district. Each district Administrative team has spent many hours preparing the Return to Learn plan for our students and staff. I will be sharing a more in depth plan early next week as we near the start of school. We will continue sharing the same message in each district, masks are not required but highly recommended to mitigate the spread. Each district has measures in place to promote safety, extra cleaning will take place, and we will do all that we can to help slow the spread. Understand, things are still rapidly changing and we will provide updates as soon as possible to keep you all informed. Please be on the lookout for additional information early next week. We are all eager to get started back up in the next few weeks, we look forward to seeing all of our students and staff! Kevin Wood Superintendent Sioux Central Clay Central Everly Laurens Marathon

Hello Sioux Central Parents and students, I hope everyone is staying safe and your son/daughter(s) are enjoying the final weeks of summer. There was some miscommunication surrounding a post from the school nurse nearly one week ago and I wanted to clarify a few things. We want all of our students to return safely come August 24, 2020. We realize there are students with underlying health concerns and we understand and will accommodate. The Statement from the earlier post stated : "In an effort to keep your child(dren) as safe and healthy as possible during the 2020-2021 school year, we are instituting new policy/procedures. One of these new policies is that all students with an underlying health condition will be required to obtain a clearance from their healthcare provider prior to coming to school, as well as a health plan/guidance regarding school attendance during this COVID 19 crisis." We are not requiring medical documentation or clearance for students to return on August 24, 2020. What we are looking for is any additional communication from parents to help our school nurse and staff ensure we are doing all we can do for our students with health conditions. We are not requiring a medical release for students to return to school, we are encouraging parents to communicate additional health concerns with the school nurse. The form that was created, is not a required form, we just want simple communication on any changes to your son or daughter's health. I hope this clears up any confusion and if you have any questions please reach out to the school. Thank you, Kevin Wood Sioux Central Superintendent
